The Land Had Other Plans
The land came first.
Before there was a website, before there were herbs, cacao, or sea moss, before there was a family, there was this piece of land tucked into the mountains of Costa Rica.
Chel was the first steward.
Chel found this piece of land deep in the Costa Rican jungle and chose to dedicate her life to caring for it. She gave it a name that reflected the intention she wanted it to carry.
Seva.
A Sanskrit word meaning 'selfless service.'
It wasn’t chosen as a brand. It was chosen as an intention.
A quiet promise that this place would exist in service to the land, the people who came here, and the medicine that has been growing here long before any of us arrived.
Years later, I came to Seva as a volunteer.
I wasn’t looking for a business. I was looking for myself. Like so many people, I had spent years chasing a version of success that looked good from the outside but left me feeling disconnected from what mattered most. Living close to the jungle changed that. It reminded me that healing doesn’t begin with another product or another achievement. It begins by remembering our relationship with nature, with community, and with ourselves.
Together, Seva slowly became more than a place.
It became a practice.
A place where ancient medicines are respected. Where the land is cared for. Where healing is approached with humility. Where service comes before success.
Then our daughter, Nyoli, was born here.
She reminds us every day that Seva isn’t something we own. It’s something we’re here to care for. Everything we build today is with the hope that the next generation inherits a healthier relationship with the earth than the one we inherited.
Every leaf we harvest, every block of cacao we prepare, every package we send is part of that promise.

These medicines existed long before us. We don't claim to have discovered them or own their story. We are grateful to learn from the Indigenous peoples of this region and the generations of Caribbean communities who have cared for these traditions, and we're honored to help carry that knowledge forward with humility and respect.

I truly love each and every pound of cacao I receive from Seva! I love that they support the locals in Costa Rica! Recently they accidentally ran out of the cacao I ordered and when I reached out this responded very quickly and told me they accidentally sent out the shipping order and for the misunderstanding they would send a gift to compensate for the misunderstanding! The gift wasn’t needed but truly appreciated! I am excited to get my next batch of cacao!!
